Jessamine County is located in central Kentucky's Bluegrass Region adjacent to Fayette County. James Douglas a surveyor from Virginia came into the Bluegrass in 1774. He found a stream, which was a valuable find at the time. These streams were used to operate mills. Mr. Douglas called the stream "Jessamine," named for his daughter. The area later became Jessamine County.
Jessamine County has experienced tremendous growth in the last several years. The estimated population count according to the 2000 census will be around 42,000. Several industries and businesses are located in the county which include Sargent & Greenleaf, TMI, Adcom, Gulf States and McLane-Cumberland.
Jessamine County is the home of Camp Nelson National Cemetary established in 1865, the summer after the Civil War ended. On September 17, 1879, High Bridge was dedicated. It was the highest bridge over a navigable stream ever to be completed. The Valley View Ferry, the oldest continuing business in Kentucky, is located at the Kentucky River in Jessamine County. Asbury College and Asbury Theological Seminary are both located in Wilmore in Jessamine County. Our county is home to beautiful horse farms as well along with many golf courses. Our office is located in Nicholasville, the county seat of Jessamine County.
Each fall beginning in 1980, Jessamine County has hosted the Jessamine Jamboree. This festival is held the first weekend in October and draws large crowds from surrounding areas to our county.
